7 Reasons Why You Should Never Buy The Newest Computer Hardware

Having the fastest, newest computer is a wonderful feeling. Even coming home with the fastest, newest computer you can possibly afford is a great feeling too. A lot of times, its also a pretty stupid thing to do.

You see when you buy the newest in computer technology, it costs big bucks to be one of the first people using it. But before you go out and pay $4,100 for a 64GB USB drive, take a look at what some other people have paid in the past for the newest technology which is basically worthless today.

  1. $159,000 for a 1000 Word Memory of 12 Alphanumeric Characters
    Remington Univac
    The Remington Univac
  2. $9,995 for a 5MHZ Processor, 512KB of RAM and a 5MB Hard Drive
    Apple Lisa
    The Apple Lisa

  3. $3,398 for 10MB of Storage and 70MS seek time
    XComp Hard Disk
    The X Comp Hard Disk
  4. $3,300 for an 8 Color 13″ Display and 51KB Mini Disk Drive
    ISC Color Terminal
    The ISC Color Terminal

  5. $46,500 for a 20MB Hard Drive and the RTE-IV Operating System
    HP 1000 Model 45
    The HP 1000 Model 45

  6. $8,499 for a 20MHZ Processor and 2MB of RAM
    Tandy 5000 MC Professional
    The Tandy PC

  7. $666 for 4Kb of RAM, a Built in Keyboard and 28 Amp Power Supplies
    Apple Micro Computer
    The Apple Micro Computer

Although these were all at the cutting edge of computer technology when they were released, they were all worth drastically less just a short while after they came out.

I think you mean 64 gb solid state drive. we already have 64 gb usb drives that you can’t give away. :)

MJK,

Actually, I did mean to say what I said. The reason I said 64GB USB is because they are selling for as high as $7,000 at some sites, where as the solid state drives are about $1,300. But as we have seen with USB drives in the past(like the 2gb), their value drops drastically within a relatively short period of time.

Never buy any newly released product. Wait for at least a year until all the foolish trend-setters have done so. They are willing to pay big money to be the first on the bandwagon of any new thing and usually have more credit than brains.

After a year, all the bugs in the product will have been sorted out. Tweaks will have been made. More of the product will be on the market. Prices will have fallen.

This holds true for computers or any new product.

I bet in a year, all those fools who bought the Iphone when it was first released will be cursing themselves when newer models are shipped at a lower price with all the bugs gone.

I disagree with this article, if you have a need for the hardware, just like in the examples at the time, go for it. If you continuously wait and wait for hardware, you’ll never have what you need. As hardware drops in price it also become dated and you will possibly need something faster sooner, causing you to actually spend more in the long run.

PandaMan- Yeah there are always the exceptions, but it is very smart for the average person to wait a short while and avoid paying $4000+ for a USB drive which will be worth a small fraction of that in a very short time.

Wait. You mean to tell me that tech prices are always falling?
My mind has been blown.

Are you saying we have to wait YEARS to buy cheap and nice hardware? What a dumb thing… I agree with laowaitattler
whos says the best thing is wait at least a year. But, wait for 20 years? Aww, come on!

Luis - No one said to wait 20 years. I would recommend waiting for a price drop, but 20 years is way too long.

mjk: yeah i think you may be thinking of megabytes instead of gigabytes. 64gb usb flash drives cost 4k$. See

why anyone would want or need one im not sure. you could get 32 2 gb thumb drives for 320$.. i guess its about the “cool” factor of having something thats better/smaller than what someone else has. maybe this should be called the idiot factor though.. as 64gb flash drives will probably cost 20$ in a year or two.

the internet seems to breed ppl that scan read instead of reading and thinking. i too at first thought no he means an ssd drive! but then i thought for a second.. no, what he means by usb drive is a usb flash drive. though,,, maybe the post should be about ssd drives, as they are much more the current hot thing, and actually have some performance benefit, while usb flash drives at a super high capacity just hold more data in a slightly smaller form than other memory cards/drives.

the only reason i can think of to buy something brand new is for the purpose of homebrew on items such as the PSP or DS, other things as well.

In 1990 I bought a box of ten Verbatim 1.44 3″1/4 floppy disk (not formatted) at the equivalent of $58.50
I must say that on one of that FD I could store virtually all I needed: from
DOS 3.3, wordstar, lotus a turbo pascal compiler, norton utilities and a lot of disk space for documents.

Two weeks ago I bought a half Tb external HD for less then $150 and is almost full.

Certainly your average consumer isn’t going to need to buy the latest offerings from super-computer companies. However, these products are available for businesses and governments who can use them for their intended use: the best damn thing money can buy.

But the fact that people do buy the super computers provide the technology makers with the capital to be able to make that kind of technology available to us in a few years.

So the same principal as applies to every other aspect of our consumer lifestyle applies here: buy within your means, and buy what you need to survive today.

There is almost no kind of purchase we make (that isn’t food) that has a shorter shelf life than computers.

Waiting until the price decreases on the newest whizbang box or peripheral is damned good advice for the majority of us because we do not NEED the latest techology.

Let the idiots who are trying to impress their idiotic friends pay through the nose for the latest and greatest and put the money you save into something worthwhile.
