Intel Launches Next Gen Penryn Processors
Intel has announced their next generation Penryn processors. Their are 16 different versions of the chip available. New technological advances allow Intel to place a lot more transistors on every chip, increasing performance by a large amount while simultaneously lowering production costs.
These are the most complex processors in Intel history, and they contain 820,000,000 transistors per chip. Compare that to the first generation Intel processors which had only 2,300 transistors per chip. According to the WashingtonPost, “The transistors on the new chips are so small that more than 30 million of them can fit onto the head of a pin.”
The new materials which are used to make the smaller transistors also drastically reduce the loss of electricity. Intel is calling it the biggest change in transistor technology in 40 years. Get all the information about the next generation processors from Intel’s 45nm technology page.
