IBM, Samsung, and Toshiba Create Alliance Over 32nm Circuits
Toshiba and others have joined forces to develop the first system chips using 32 nanometer circuitry. That’s far below Intel’s new 45nm Penryn processor.
The alliance consists of Toshiba, IBM, Samung, Infineon, Freescale, and Singapore’s Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing. The agreement lasts until the year 2010. Hopefully, that’s the year these chips will hit the market.
32 nanometer is a significant improvement over the current 60nm and even 45nm processes. It will allow for noticeable reductions in chip size, heat produced, and performance.
The alliance was formed because the move to smaller processes is “too difficult and expensive” for any company working alone.
