Introducing The Apple MacBook Air: The Worlds Thinnest Laptop

This morning Steve Jobs of Apple pulled the new MacBook Air out of a manila folder. At just .76 inches, it’s the world’s thinnest notebook computer.

The MacBook Air comes complete with a full size keyboard, a 13.3 inch display and built in iSight. For those of you used to a much larger screen, the innovative touchpad may help ease the transition. The touchpad sports the same multi-touch interface found in the iPhone allowing the user to zoom and unzoom using natural motions.

The MacBook Air comes with your choice of 80gb hard drive or 64gb solid state drive. The SSD option is necessary for such a small laptop. Chances are it will travel as much as the user.

Another plus is the 5 hour batter life, excellent for a laptop in any class. This can be attributed to the relatively large battery which takes up the vast majority of the laptop’s mass.

Needless to say the Air doesn’t include an optical drive, although an external superdrive is available for $99. Also, the laptop will be able to take advantage of another Mac or PC’s optical drive via a program called remote disk.

The MacBook Air will start at $1799, which some might consider a little steep for what you get as far as hardware. However, if you have the money and you’re looking for something small, stylish, and powerful (relatively), the MacBook Air may be right for you. Apple is taking orders now.

Cool stuff. I do hope Apple continues to innovate in the laptop market. If I had more disposable income, I’d probably buy one of these, and an ipod to go with it. (Don’t laugh.) I’ve hesitated to get an ipod, because I hear they often break and you wind up having to buy a new one about once a year. I feel like they should make them to last longer than that. I guess they’re not interested in poor - or shall I say “value-conscious” - customers like me.
