Dell’s Inspiron-Mini to Feature Ubuntu

Dell recently made an official announcement that it’s upcoming Inspirion 910 (aka the mini-Inspiron, the Eee PC killer) will come with Ubuntu 8.04 as well as WIndows XP. There is speculation that it might even possibly be running Ubuntu Netbook Remixed, a special flavor of the distribution designed for ultraportable interfaces; in other words, efficiently allowing the user to interact with the programs and OS despite the minimal screen real estate. The picture above shows an early version of Ubuntu Netbook Remix.

The Inspiron 910 will be equipped with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, up to 1GB of RAM, and an 8.9″ screen with a resolution of up to 1024×600. The computer will start at a 4GB SSD and be upgradeable to 16GB, include a built-in camera for all you IM needs, a media card reader, 3 USB ports, and WiFi connectivity.

The PC is rumored to come out in a few days, and to start at $299 for the base model. (more…)

Your ISP’s DNS Server May Be Poisoned!

Security researcher Dan Kaminsky discovered a vulnerability in the Internet’s Domain Name System. The DNS System allows the translation of names like www.apple.com into IP Addresses such as 172.133.1.231 that the Internet can route.

This vulnerability that Kaminsky found is present in ALL Domain Name Servers, from Microsoft’s version, to Cisco’s, to even the Linux BIND Server. What this means, is that the whole Internet is affected and a savvy attacker could use this to his advantage by poisoning the DNS Cache and then rerouting email traffic, hijacking domains and spoofing websites. The Details On Intel’s Centrino 2

Intel has officially launched the Centrino 2 platform. Shipping from today, it consists primarily of a 45nm Penryn Core 2 Duo processor running from 2.26GHz to 3.06GHz, with a 6MB L2 cache and a 1066MHz front side bus.

The chipset has integrated WiFi-N and Graphics which would be augmented with WiMax support later this year. The biggest boone Intel claims is that the Centrino 2 platform offers 23% more performance at 23% less power as well as 70% faster graphics.

Two key features of the Centrino 2 platform are HUGI (Hurry Up and Get Idle) and VPro, which would let system administrators remotely control laptops via wireless even when the laptop is sleeping. (more…)

Is The Computer Mouse Headed for Extinction?

Gestural control systems like touch screens and facial recognition systems might soon spell doom for the humble computer mouse, a Gartner analyst predicts.

Although the mouse functions adequately enough in a desktop environment, in the mobile and gaming environments its shortcomings are glaring indeed.

For example, on a tiny laptop screen, it is way easier to just use your fingers to touch whatever you want, or if you’re sitting on a couch playing with your console, having to find a horizontal, smooth spot to use a mouse is next to impossible.

Enter the alternatives:

Face & Hand Gesture Recognition - Panasonic, Sony and Canon are using face recognition and hand gestures for the control of tv video and menus instead of a remote.

Emotive Response Recognition - Emotive systems where you can wear a headset and control a computer by simply thinking. A device that can do this is set to hit the market in September.

Touchscreens - Apple iPod and Microsoft Surface have shown us the usability of such interfaces in our daily lives. (more…)

Speed Up Your PC: 9 Steps to Help You Turbocharge Your Computer

There are many many articles out on the net on how to speed up your computer. However, many of those articles are often old and outdated. Today we are going to compile a list of things you can do to speed up your machine.

In some cases, the improvements are so dramatic, that you might even forgo the thought of buying a new computer all together!

The trick to having a fast computer is to ensure that its hardware is functioning as smoothly and as quickly as possible. The second part of it is to ensure that the software you’re running is bloat-free and well coded.

In this article, we will be focusing on software more than hardware as that is the easier of the two to tune-up and requires little financial investment. (That is the point anyway, if you have an unlimited budget, just go out and buy a faster computer or really turbocharge it.) (more…)

1.5 Terabytes of Seagate Goodness

Seagate has just announced the world’s first 1.5-terabyte 3.5″ hard drive along with a 500-gigabyte 2.5″ hard drive for notebooks to meet the explosive demand for digital media storage

The Barracuda 7200rpm, 1.5TB hard drive is the single largest jump in hard drive capacity in 50 years. A half-terabyte jump from 1TB previously.

The new drives use perpendicular magnetic recording technology, allowing them to use less magnetic particles to store a single bit of data.

The new hard drives will be available in the fourth quarter of this year. (more…)

Asus Offering $100 Rebates on the Eee PC 900

With the Eee PC 901 shipping (or about to ship) worldwide, who in their right mind would buy the now outdated Eee PC 900?  Think of it, for an extra $50 you get twice the processor at half the power usage.  Thus, in an attempt to sell its remaining stock, Asus is now issuing a $100 rebate on all Eee PC 900s sold between today and July 31st.

The rebate brings the Eee PC 900’s current price-tag of $550 down to a competitive $450.  A few noteworthy differences in the two models are as follows.  The 901 has the more efficient atom processor, a bigger battery, better microphone, sleeker design, and an overclocking/underclocking feature.  However, both models have the same screen size and resolution and more-or-less the same features.  So if you’re tight on money, you may want to give the 900 a shot.

AMD’s New Radeon HD 4850 Breaks Expectations

The Radeon HD 4850 is AMD’s upcoming budget powerhouse and little brother to the upcoming Radeon HD 4870. The architecture details are being kept secret for now, but PC Perspective was given a card to benchmark and review.

At this point, we know is that the Radeon HD 4850 is a single-slot, 512 MB card with two DVI outputs and one DVI to HDMI converter. According to our good friend GPU-Z, the HD 4850 runs on 55-nm technoology, similar to that of the upcoming NVIDIA GeForce 9800GTX+. It has a 625 MHz core clock and 993 MHz GDDR3 memory. These numbers don’t seem like much when compared to similarly priced Intel cards, but benchmarks show that clock speed isn’t everything. (more…)

Meet the Roadrunner SuperComputer: Twice as Fast as Big Blue

The Roadrunner is currently the world’s fastest supercomputer, a $100 million machine that sustained a processing speed of 1 Peta flop during a 2 hour test on May 25th.

This breakthrough took engineers at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and IBM Corp 6 years to complete. Roadrunner is twice as fast as IBM’s Blue Gene and is intended for simulating nuclear weapon detonations as well as for other applications in engineering, medicine and science.

David Turek, vice president of IBM’s supercomputing programs was quoted saying that some elements of Roadrunner can be traced to popular video games, and in some senses Roadrunner is a souped up Playstation 3. (more…)
