NVIDIA Leaks Specs for the New 512MB 8800 GTS

NVIDIA momentarily leaked the specs for their new 8800 GTS today. The much anticipated information was seen on their website a full week earlier than the expected launch date, after which it was promptly removed. It looks as if this new card will beat the current front runner, the 8800 Ultra, by leaps and bounds. The new 512MB 8800 GTS is built on the 8800 GT’s G92 chip set. (more…)

Microsoft to Change Restrictive Anti-Piracy Tool in Vista

The WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) tool is used by Microsoft to detect and suspend the use of pirated software. Microsoft has decided to soften the approach of the WGA tool currently being used in Vista. Instead they will implement a new version of the WGA tool that uses reminder bubbles to nag and annoy the user into buying a “genuine” version. (more…)

Samsung Develops GDDR5 Memory

Samsung has just developed the world’s first GDDR5 Memory clocked at 6 Gbps (gigabits per second). These chips will transfer data at unprecedented speed all while using 20% less energy than GDDR3, the current standard in most video cards. (more…)

The Liquid Nitrogen Cooled Computer

Apple is Investigating MacBook Hard Drive Problems

Apple has gotten “a few” reports from MacBook notebook buyers that said they have been having problems with the hard drives. They are currently looking into the reported hard drive issues.

According to research by Retrodata, “The read/write heads appear to fail mechanically, quickly causing deep scratches to the platter surface, and rendering the drives practically unrecoverable.” The data loss may be isolated to the Seagate 2.5-inch drives with firmware version 7.01 installed. Microsoft Vista is Still Sluggish After Service Pack Update

Windows Vista LogoMicrosoft has hinted that Vista after the SP1 update is faster than the original Vista RTM, according to Florida based researcher Craig Barth. But after performance testing, he said that they “found pretty much nothing measurable. It surprised me as much as it surprised everyone else, but the numbers are the numbers.” (more…)

Intel Launches Next Gen Penryn Processors

Intel LogoIntel has announced their next generation Penryn processors. Their are 16 different versions of the chip available. New technological advances allow Intel to place a lot more transistors on every chip, increasing performance by a large amount while simultaneously lowering production costs.

These are the most complex processors in Intel history, and they contain 820,000,000 transistors per chip. Compare that to the first generation Intel processors which had only 2,300 transistors per chip. (more…)

Microsoft Files for a Patent on Automatic “Goodbye’s”

Microsoft LogoThe Microsoft Corporation recently applied for a patent from the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for automatic goodbye messages. I know your first thought might be to compare this to Paris Hilton’s application to trademark the words “that’s hot,” but this one is arguably not as stupid.
